The Olympics: 5 Things You Probably Didn’t Know

How long have you been a fan of the Olympics?

In my case, I have been watching the Olympics for many years now. Every time I watch thousands of athletes compete and showcase their talents and I feel euphoric.

Whenever the teams or players I have been supporting stand on a podium and receive their awards, I feel like I am victorious, too.

During the Olympics, many sports take place. Baseball, archery, basketball, boxing, cycling, diving, golf, and weightlifting are among my favorites. What’s yours? For sure, you have a wider list of sports than mine.

Now, how much do you know about the Olympics? As a fan, I believe I know everything. But I was wrong. Here are some interesting things you did not know yet about the Olympics. Without further ado, let’s begin.

Olympic Winners Bite Medals to Show Purity

When I watched the Olympics for the first time, I wondered why the winners bite their medals. Later I found that biting medals show their purity. But do not be disappointed. Today’s gold medals are not really gold. Yes, you read it right. Research has shown that Olympic gold medals are made of 92% silver. They also have some gold content, but it is only2%. How much do gold medals cost if you would sell them? It is not as much as you think. The 2016 gold medal is only worth $500. Let us hope that gold medals would have higher gold content than silver soon.

Before, the Olympics organization did not present winners with gold medals. But everything changed in 1904. Yes, finally, the presentation of winners is one of the much-anticipated events during the entire competition.

Winners were also awarded certificates, olive branches, and silver medals. On the other hand, the runners-up received laurel wreaths and bronze medals. Unfortunately, the third-place finishers didn’t receive anything.

Only Men Participated in the Ancient Olympics

It is sad to know, but women were not allowed to participate or even watch the ancient Olympics. Only the male Greek citizens were entitled to join the competition.

Fortunately, unmarried women could watch the ancient game. In fact, the priestess of Demeter was given a chance to sit beside the Stadium altar.

Everything changed in the modern Olympics. In the 1900 Summer Olympics, for example, women were allowed to participate. But only 22 women out of 997 athletes competed in sailing, equestrianism, golf, croquet, and tennis.

In the 2012 London Olympic Games, however, all competing countries have female representatives in different sports, of course. I consider it as one of the best years for every young aspiring female athlete.

The 1908 London Olympics Lasted for 187 Days

Usually, the Olympics lasts for 16 days, consisting of around 300 events. But in the 1908 London Olympics, it has lasted for more than six months. How is that possible? In 1908, the Olympics was originally scheduled to be held in Rome. However, Mt. Vesuvius erupted during that time. So, the Olympics committee changed and rearranged the venue. The city of Naples was devastated. But despite the casualty, the Olympics was still successful. Also, the athletes, organizers, and coaching staff were safe. Eugene Grisot bagged gold in archery under the men’s continental style category. For 100 meters, Reggie Walker of South Africa won gold. In Bantamweight, A. Henry Thomas of Great Britain also won gold.

Bebe Bikila Won the Marathon in the 1960 Rome Olympics Barefoot

Have you ever tried running barefoot? I have tried before, and it was uncomfortable. But Bebe Bikila is different. During the 1960 Olympics held in Rome, he ran barefoot and brought home the bacon. During that time, Adidas was the shoe sponsor. But when Bikila tried some pairs, he ended up with shoes that did not fit properly. So, he ran without shoes and defeated other marathoners. He is truly an epitome of a hardworking athlete for every aspiring player to emulate.

Bolivia Never Won an Olympic Medal

The players from all around the world have been very competitive, giving Bolivian athletes no chance to bring home an Olympic medal ever since 1964. But there are also other countries that never win a medal in the Olympics. These are Bangladesh, Barbuda, Albania, Myanmar, Congo, and more. But let’s cheer for them for the upcoming Olympics and pray that the Covid-19 would come to an end soon.

The US Open: What You Should Know

I am an avid fan of the US Open for many years now. I thought I know everything about the sport. But I discovered that there are a lot of things I didn’t know.

How long have you been a fan of the US Open? Whether you have only been fallen in love with the sport for a few months or years already, I tell you what. There’s more to learn.

But your long search is finally over. This guide got you covered. I hope this could help broaden your knowledge as a player or hobbyist as well.

Famous Players with Record-Breaking Achievements

While many talented tennis players would have thought that a 19-year-old Pete Sampras would become the youngest male champion in the US Open Tennis history? Well, Pete Sampras brought home the title in 1990. At a very young age, he is known for his tremendous shot, making him the talk of the town.

He also excels in return of serve, forehand, backhand, and passing shots. His movement is very smooth. His net game, on the other hand, is on a different level. No wonder he is the first-ever youngest male US Open champion.

For the women’s division, Tracy Austin got the record. For only 16 years and eight months, she brought home the 1979 US Open championship, making her instant famous during that time. Two years after, she won the 1981 US Open. She once became the World’s number 1 professional tennis player.

But age does not matter to William Larned and Molla Mallory. William, for instance, won a US Open championship in 1911 when he was already 38 years old. Molla was 42 years old.

If you have been playing tennis for over a few decades already without getting any award or championship, do not be disappointed. William and Molla proved that age is just a number. We never know you would be a tennis champion soon. With patience and dedication, you can turn your dreams into a reality.

Established in 1881

The US Open is the second oldest Grand Slam. The first-ever US National Championship was held in1881. Wimbledon is the oldest tennis tournament, founded in 1877.

Before, only the men’s singles and doubles events were conducted. But with the organization’s attempt to provide equal opportunities for every aspiring athlete, women’s singles events were added in 1887. But the good news did not stop there. In 1889, women’s doubles were included in the programme, expanding the US Open’s popularity and growth.

Held in Multiple Venues

Probably, you only think of a hard court. But the truth is that the US Open is considered the only major to have been played on grass and clay court.

From 1881 up to 1974, the US Open was held on a grass court. Then, the organization changed it to clay. But it did not last for a long time. It only started in 1975 and ended in 1977.

With the inconvenience associated with a grass or clay court, the US Open built its very own hard courts in 1978, increasing the player’s safety and peace of mind.

The USTA National Tennis Center

You probably have heard of the famous USTA National Tennis Center. But what is it really? The USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center was formerly  known as the USTA National Tennis Center. It is home to 22 hard courts, accommodating a large number of spectators. It also consists of the Arthur Ashe Stadium – recognized as the world’s largest tennis stadium. Packed with a cutting-edge facility, it has a retractable roof.

As the largest tennis stadium, it can accommodate more than 23,771 spectators aside from the players and coaching staff.

Serena and Venus Williams Meet in the Finals

Sisters are supposed to be supporting each other. But Serena and Venus became the first sisters who played against each other in a grand slam final, where Venus won the match.

As a much-anticipated game of the year, the championship receives approximately 22.7 million American viewers.

Although they usually are opponents in tennis hard courts, they are on good terms in real life.

What interesting facts do you know? Do not hesitate to share that in the comment section below.

Why Is The Superbowl So Important

Every first Sunday of February, millions of people throughout the US and other parts of the globe watch the Super Bowl – the biggest entertainment event in the country annually.

And I am one of those fans who never miss the championship game of the National Football League (NFL) and the American Football League (AFL) ever since when I was young.

The Super Bowl, an annual culmination of the NFL season, holds a special place in the hearts of millions, transcending the boundaries of sports to become a cultural phenomenon. It’s not just about determining the season’s champion; it’s a celebration of competition, entertainment, and unforgettable moments. As a fan, the Super Bowl is more than just a game-it’s an experience etched into my memory. What makes it even more special is the unique way I express my fervor for the sport: through the cherished tradition of collecting NFL trading cards. I even used to buy an NFL Mystery Box every now and then, to experience the excitement of discovering rare and valuable football cards. These little pieces of history encapsulate iconic moments from the season, immortalizing the players who’ve left an indelible mark on the game. As I eagerly await the Super Bowl, the thrill is intensified by the prospect of adding cards featuring standout performances from the championship game to my collection, creating a tangible link between me, my favorite players, and the historic event that is the Super Bowl.

In 2020, while everyone stays at home because of the Covid-19, Fox estimated approximately 102.1 million viewers, making it the tenth most watched Super Bowl in history.

Have you ever wondered why Super Bowl is one of the much-awaited events in the US? Well, I also have the same thought. For many years of watching the Super Bowl, here are some reasons why the championship game of the NFL becomes a non-official holiday among Americans, I believe:

Live Performances from Our Favorite Celebrities

Yes, this is one of the things I really look forward to during the Super Bowl. For sure, some of you could relate to.

With many celebrities that already performed during Super Bowl, the duo of Shakira and Jennifer Lopez is one of my favorites.

More than the artists’ singing prowess, Shakira and Jennifer Lopez never disappoint me with their dancing moves. They prove that age was just a number, after all. No wonder their performance alone recorded a whopping 103 million viewers!

Beyonce’s fierce performance is another favorite of mine. Apart from the jawdropping stage design and trendy outfits, her excellent dancing and singing skills always amaze me. She’s indeed Queen B for a reason.

But before Beyonce, Jennifer Lopez, and Shakira, Michael Jackson was the first blockbuster halftime show. Everyone would surely agree, right?

The Intensity of the Game

Aside from the artists’ breathtaking performances, the championship game is intense. The defense, for instance, is more intriguing than any type of sports, I think.

There are diving catches in in baseball, whereas, in basketball, there are blocks. In football, on the other hand, it has the overall excitement on defense.

Although the offense is king, the defense in American football can generate as much intensity and excitement as a long pass or touchdown can.

Defensive touchdowns are among the most exciting plays in American football for me.

There can also be a great deal of excitement due to sports betting that friends and family members might place on their favorite team during Superbowl. In addition, some may choose to bet online and perhaps go through a guide on how to bet on NFL online, which makes the game much more alive and exhilarating.

The players also give me goosebumps. Their competitiveness is contagious, too. Although it is only broadcast on TV, I could really feel their desire to bring home the bacon.

Fun Commercials

I did not know if it is normal, but I always laugh every time I watch the ads during Super Bowls. Yes, they are extremely fun and witty sometimes. But did you know that a 30-second ad cost approximately $5.5 million in 2020? In-game ad revenue in the 2020 Super Bowl was around $448.7 million, which is not surprising at all, according to Kantar. This price might sound exorbitant, but it is actually carefully decided using analysis tools. Networks airing the Superbowl use pricing tools similar to Conjointly’s Van Westendorp PSM and other market factors to decide what the cost of airtime will be. And clearly, it works because the price keeps going up and companies line up to pay it.

Fox also reported their pregame and postgame ads generated around $600 million in 2020 alone.

No wonder its audiences of all ages much anticipate the commercials throughout the Super Bowl.

The Never-Ending Rivalries

Yes, the rivalries in Super Bowl give me an adrenaline rush. We’re human, after all.

Rivalry in sport is rampant. Baseball has the Red Sox and the Yankees. Ice hockey has the Red Wings and Blackhawks. Basketball has Lakers and Celtics. But don’t get me wrong. The rivalries in American football are more intense for me. Rivalries have been an interesting part of basketball for die-hard fans. A lot of people show their loyalty to the teams by purchasing their merchandise. This can include, figurines, backpacks, phone covers, etc. Some fans even get custom t-shirts embroidered (from Mato and Hash or from similar embroidery service providers) with the team logo to show their allegiance to the team. That said, a few of the rivalries I could not forget are the Redskins/Cowboys, Packers/Bears, and Raiders/Steelers, to name a few. But I can’t help but be more excited when the team I have been supporting since day one wins. I also witnessed my bias fail a couple of times already. But it is always part of the game.

If you are a fan of basketball or baseball. It is time to watch the Super Bowl. Most sports have that high level of intensity and excitement. But the fun in Super Bowl is beyond your imagination. From the live performances of your favorite artists to the battle between NFL clubs, you can witness everything you are looking for in the world of sports.

It is no surprise the Super Bowl seems like a holiday among Americans. So, it is never too late to become a fan of this biggest entertainment event in the country!
